Olympus Fighting Championship returns to the North East combat-sports mecca, Rainton Meadows Arena, this Sunday 26th September.
The 23-fight card plays host to a mixture of MMA, Muay Thai & K1 bouts, with 4 titles on the line. In only their fourth show, Olympus are already establishing themselves as a top promotion, featuring some prominent names from some of the best gyms in the UK throughout their cards. Let’s take a closer look at 5 of the bouts that will feature as part of Sunday night’s action.
Alex Williams vs Ben Godfrey:
Two of the best young amateurs in the country will face off in the feature preliminary bout of the card.
The amount of competition experience Alex Williams and Ben Godfrey bring to the cage is staggering. Between them, they already hold an abundance of martial arts accolades; Godfrey is a 6x British freestyle wrestling champion and part of the Team GB Freestyle wrestling team. Williams is a 4 x BJJ World Champion & IMMAF World Silver medalist.
Williams recently went viral when a video of an unknown attacker approached him and his friend during their lunch break at college and Alex dealt with the situation expertly. After the attackers attempts to strike the young world champion, and threatened to stab him, Williams demonstrated his grappling prowess, nullifying the threat of an attack.
Discussing the incident with Teeside Live, he said: ‘’As he got closer to me I saw an opportunity to defend myself and fight back, so I took it.
‘When the fight or flight kicks in you’ve got to choose one or the other and I chose to fight back and I was focused.
‘Obviously I was worried in case he had a knife on him because he has threatened to stab me but in situations like that it’s about surviving and I was thankfully ready for him.’
No matter the result of this contest, everyone should keep an eye on these young men as they will no doubt be at the very top of UK MMA in years to come.
Roman David vs Yannick Mezepo:
The team you surround yourself with is a vital part of any mixed martial artists career, and both Roman David & Mezepo have incredible coaches guiding them through their journey, under the tutelage of Chris Fields & Alex Enlund, respectively.
Since making the move to SBG South Shields, seasoned sambo practitioner Mezepo, has shown monumental developments in his skillset, having won every bout he’s competed in since making the switch. Striking a much cooler and composed character in recent bouts, Mezepo’s growth as a mixed martial artist has been extremely apparent. He will be hunting his third consecutive victory in this welterweight contest.
David made his amateur debut in August, in which he secured a unanimous decision victory over Barry Kennedy. Over the 9 minutes, the Irishman displayed his slick striking and solid takedown offence, whilst constantly listening to the booming commands of Chris Fields.
Both athletes are rangey combatants who possess frightening striking speed and well-rounded games.
This one could easily be the fight of the night!
Garry Sudron vs George D’rozario
It’s a miracle Garry Sudron is even making the walk to the cage on Sunday night. After a freak incident when training in 2017, Sudron was left paralysed from the waist down; with fears he would never walk again.
Sudron refused to accept the new lifestyle and after extensive rehabilitation, he was able to walk again. But that wasn’t enough for the North East man, the next goal was to make the walk to the cage once more. And that he will, on September 26th when he faces late replacement George D’rozario .
D’rozario enters the bout bolstering a 2-0 record, with one TKO stoppage and a rear-naked choke finish. D’rozariobrings an impressive ground game and strong wrestling base into the contest.
Michael Tchamou vs Mitchell Richards There will be a serious amount of power in the cage when Michael Tchamou meets Mitchell Richards in a battle for the vacant Olympus Middleweight title.
Tchamou’s martial arts journey began in Cameroon, when he was fighting for him and his brother to eat. He is well versed in a number of martial arts disciplines including Sambo, Muay Thai and an indeginous African art called Fusharido. Since moving to the UK, his rise through the rankings has been meteoric, currently finding himself in the top 40 of the UK and Ireland’s professional Middleweights*.
Richards will make the walk to the cage for the first time since 2016, having suffered a string of pull outs. However, Richards is no stranger to long lay-offs, having struggled to get matched for his highly anticipated professional debut. Maximus always comes to fight, his tenacious, forward pressure style always delivering for the fans and making for exciting fights.
Perry Goodwin vs Shaun Luther:
Goodwin will be looking to return to winning ways following his loss to Morgan Charriere last time out.
He said: “ I can’t wait. Rainton meadows, I’ve been there a few times and I think the last two times I got two first round finishes, one was in 17 seconds, the other was total domination. I feel back home, back to where it all started.”
“Me and Shaun are very similar, I think, he might think I’m a bag of shite but I think he’s decent I think he’s a tough guy, I think he’s fought some really good guys and we’ve both made careers on fighting the hardest fights and when you do that, you come out with losses.
“He’s got losses, I’ve got losses, but we have both fought tough guys but make no doubt about it, when it comes to the 26th September, I’m walking round that cage like a dog. You’ve got to understand, there’s levels and you dont come out of a title fight, training the way I did and working as hard as I always do to go from hero to zero. I am better than I ever was.”
Shaun Luther will be returning to the cage following a 23 month lay off. He will be keen to build on his huge performance last time out, scoring a stunning knockout of the year contender in only 20 seconds of his bout against Martin McDonough at Cage Warriors 108.
With a combined 9 finishes coming by way of KO/TKO, fans can expect an all out war in the main event of the evening.
