Jose Aldo on McGregor’s ranking “I think he’s undeserving”

With still over four months to go until Conor McGregor fights Jose Aldo for the UFC featherweight title in Las Vegas’ MGM Grand, the thrash talk has already started. But not by who you might have thought.

This week, speaking to Brazilian outlet Globo (translation by BloodyElbow), Aldo was the one who had a few words to say on all things Conor McGregor and he wasn’t for mincing them.

“I’m getting a taste for [trash talking].” Aldo said.

“We have to be provocative to sell fights, talk more, to know we’ll be more profitable. It’s important.”

“The financial side is great for me, for the UFC, and for him.” The only ever UFC featherweight champion went on to say.

Like many of the other featherweights in the UFC, it seems Aldo has decided to acknowledge McGregor’s excellence in the talking realm. Inside the Octagon, though, is another matter.

“If you talk about rankings, I think he’s undeserving.” Aldo said about the currently number 3 ranked McGregor who has gone unbeaten in five fights since entering the UFC, taking out two top ten opponents in that time.

“The rankings serve no fucking purpose, nobody fucking respects it, so this fight is good for me because of the money.”

And he’s right in that. With UFC 189 slated to be one of the biggest cards of the year, this fight is good for both Aldo and McGregor, win or lose, in the money making stakes. For all other aspects, we’ll have to wait a bit longer for the answer.
